Day clinic for veterans opens

WALLA WALLA, Washington – The Walla Walla VA Medical Center has made walk-in service easier and more convenient. A same-day clinic is now available at the Walla Walla campus for both traveling veterans and walk-in visits when a veteran cannot get a timely appointment with their own primary care provider.

Veterans can get assistance at the clinic with minor medical issues without a long wait for an appointment.

“This is not an emergency care and it is not an urgent care,” Chief of Staff Dr. Mark Liu said. “There are procedures that we are not able to do, taking care of very minor type things.”

The clinic is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Walla Walla VA Director Chris Bjornberg said the clinic will be monitored for effectiveness, and they’ll be watching how veterans respond to this new opportunity with the goal of expanding the program in the future.

“We are going to take a look at it six months, 12 months, 18 months and just kind of see where those numbers lie as far as are we having more on Fridays and the Mondays, you know, people having to wait over the weekend, not wanting to wait over the weekend,” Bjornberg said.

Both Bjornberg and Liu said that administrative scheduling and rescheduling, prescription refills, travel pay, and other items can be addressed on the spot at the same-day clinic.
