September 25th Proclaimed “Gold Star Families Day” in Oregon

WHEREAS: America’s Gold Star families have long borne the hardships of war with dignity and devotion while watching their sons or daughters serve; and

WHEREAS: These families experienced the anxiety of watching their loved ones go off to war, not knowing whether they will return and feel the anguish of waiting for news of their loved ones; and

WHEREAS: Gold Star families stand-up for those wearing the uniform of the United States and continue to support each other through difficult times, despite heartbreaking loss and unimaginable grief; and

WHEREAS: On this day, we renew our commitment to Gold Star families, who sacrifice more than most can ever imagine, but still find the courage and strength to comfort other families, support veterans, and give back to their communities; and

WHEREAS: A joint congressional resolution on June 23, 1936 designated the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother’s Day; and

WHEREAS: President Barack Obama, on September 26, 2010, renamed this day of remembrance as Gold Star Families Day.

NOW, THEREFORE: I, Kate Brown, Governor of the State of Oregon, hereby proclaim September 25, 2016 to be

GOLD STAR FAMILIES DAY

in Oregon and encourage all Oregonians to join in this observance.

A special ceremony honoring Gold Star Mothers …

A special ceremony honoring Gold Star Mothers and Families will be held at noon Oct. 1, as part of the Moving Vietnam Memorial’s stop in Eugene later this month.
