In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 through Oct. 15), the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs is sharing stories across multiple eras of some of the nation’s most decorated Hispanic American Veterans.
Hector A. Cafferata Jr., a distinguished Korean War veteran, is celebrated for his extraordinary valor and unwavering commitment to his fellow soldiers during one of the most challenging conflicts of the 20th century. Born in 1929 in New York City, Cafferata’s journey to becoming a national hero began when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
Cafferata’s defining moment came during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in late 1950. He was assigned to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, which was tasked with defending a crucial position against overwhelming Chinese forces. In the brutal cold of the Korean winter, Cafferata and his fellow Marines faced a relentless onslaught. Despite being wounded early in the battle, he refused evacuation and continued to fight, displaying exceptional courage under fire.
Cafferata’s actions during the battle were nothing short of heroic. He single-handedly held off a wave of enemy soldiers, using his rifle and grenades to repel the attack. His bravery and determination inspired his comrades to maintain their position. His unwavering resolve and selflessness contributed significantly to the successful defense of the strategic location.
For his extraordinary valor, Hector A. Cafferata Jr. was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in the United States. His actions at Chosin Reservoir exemplify the indomitable spirit of the American servicemen who endured unimaginable hardships during the Korean War.
Beyond his military service, Cafferata continued to be an inspiration and source of pride for his fellow veterans and the nation.
