Lake County is home to at least 780 veterans at latest count and the cost to provide hard-earned benefits to those men and women has increased sharply in recent years — from $2.8 million in 2012 to $11.4 million in 2019 — according to Lake County Veterans Service Officer Charlie Pike. Recent changes in legislation mean that there are now more veterans who qualify for benefits, so more local veterans may begin receiving compensation.
