The state of Oregon has custody of the remains of about 3,500 people who died while in the care of the Oregon State Hospital or other state institutions. They are kept in a memorial, where visitors find themselves surrounded by the ashes of patients who died between 1914 and 1973.

The patients came from 48 states and 44 countries. The remains of least 110 veterans are in the memorial.
