Memorial wall offers sober reminder of the cost of war

When she arrived at the wall Saturday, it took Shirleen Helfrick a minute to find her uncle’s name. It was etched in the Oregon Memorial Traveling Wall among the 856 names of those in the state who died in combat, from Vietnam to Afghanistan and Iraq. Thirty-six were from Central Oregon, including her uncle: Selwin Deroy Wisdom. “Look at all those people,” Helfrick said. “It’s just astounding.”
