Joseph Charter School senior Cole Kiesecker has great respect for those who serve their country. So much so, that he made them the focus of his senior project.
He has a vested interest in veterans as he plans on enlisting in the military.
“That’s where my idea came from,” he said. “I’m planning to go in the military, and I want to be able to support them.”
While many service-oriented organizations focus their energy on wounded or disabled vets, Kiesecker wanted to benefit an organization that also focuses on veterans who currently serve overseas.
“I wanted to try an approach toward something that a lot of people don’t think about,” Kiesecker said. “The organization I found does that.”
Kiesecker chose Soldiers’ Angels in San Antonio, Texas, a veteran’s service nonprofit that has programs to serve service members both at home and abroad. In 2016 alone, the organization provided more than $15 million in aid to 360,000 service members, veterans, wounded heroes and military families.
Kiesecker said the project began percolating in his mind in November, and he took action this spring by collecting donations from area businesses and citizens i to host a silent auction on Facebook.
“Everybody’s done a regular fundraiser outside or done a bake sale, so I did the silent auction,” he said. “I posted the items on my page and had people ‘comment’ their bids.”
Kiesecker posted a Facebook request for auction donations in March and received immediate response from the community. Citizens donated firewood, gift certificates, a baby quilt and other items
