WWII vet honored in Newport as U.S. 20 becomes Medal of Honor Highway

In 1944, Robert Maxwell was serving as a wireman with the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division in southern France when a German hand grenade landed nearby. It was dark, and Maxwell couldn’t see to pick it up and lob it back.
