This past week marked the 75th anniversary of the forced removal of Salem’s Japanese American Community to a concentration camp in Tule Lake, California. On June 1, 1942, a shuttered train with armed guards pulled up to the Salem railroad depot on 12th Street. Amidst sad farewells from friends and neighbors that had gathered to mark the departure, more than 200 Marion County residents of Japanese descent boarded the train and headed south, leaving homes, farms, businesses and friends for the duration of the war.
