In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”

2016 Statewide Veterans Day Celebration in Salem

Come join the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs on Friday, Nov 11th for the Statewide Veterans Day Celebration – held for the first time at the Oregon WWII Memorial in Salem in recognition of the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor later this year.

Our Special Guest Speakers will be 101-year-old WWII U.S. Army Nurse Jean Wojnowski and Iraq and Afghanistan U.S. Army Veteran Dave Hagen.

The one-hour ceremony will feature music by Korean War Veteran Dan Strite, honors rendered by The Tribal Color Guard of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and much more!

Parking will be free due to state and federal holiday. ODVA asks that participants leave the spaces closest to the memorial open so they may be used by seniors and handicapped attendees. Guests are also reminded to check the weather and dress appropriately for outdoor conditions. Questions may be directed to ODVA Community Relations Coordinator Tyler Francke at tyler.francke@state.or.us and 971-239-6640.
