National POW/MIA Recognition Day in Bend sponsored by Bend Heroes Foundation. Date/Time: September 21, 2018 9:00 AM. Location: Bend Heroes Memorial at Brooks Park 35 NW Drake Rd., Bend. As part of the many National POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremonies across the nation on Sept. 21, Bend Heroes Foundation will conduct a POW/MIA ceremony at Bend Heroes Memorial in Bend to honor Bend’s 16 WWII and Vietnam war veterans who still remain MIA (Missing in Action). The names of the 16 MIAs are engraved on the Memorial’s Bend Veterans Peace monument. Proclamations by the President, of the United States, Oregon Governor and Bend Mayor will be read. The 16 MIA names will be read. A POW/MIA wreath will be placed at the monument by the sister of Bend’s only Vietnam War MIA – Bennie Lee Dexter, Sr. MSgt, USAF. The American, POW/MIA and military service flags will be on display all day at the Memorial and along Veterans Memorial Bridge on Newport Ave. Bend’s MIA families remain ever hopeful their loved ones remains will be returned to them.
