SALEM, Oregon – Approximately 30 soldiers from the Oregon Army National Guard’s 1186th Military Police Company will be recognized in a demobilization ceremony Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Anderson Readiness Center in Salem. The troops, with its main base in Salem, also are from the Milton-Freewater Armory.
The company was mobilized May 25, 2017 and deployed to Afghanistan to provide personal security details for high-profile individuals in that country. The 1186th has provided security for the presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C. in 2017. The soldiers have also been deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 and to Guantanamo Bay in 2004. The troops also provided support in Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Among the dignitaries expected at the demobilization ceremony are Major Gen. Michael Stencel, the adjutant general of the Oregon National Guard; and Land Component Commander Brig. Gen. William J. Prendergrast.
The 1186th is comprised by soldiers from Milton-Freewater, Salem, Portland, Keizer, Beaverton, Lake Oswego, West Linn, Gresham, Monmouth, Eugene, Springfield, Veneta, Central Point, Oakland, Roseburg, Redmond, Ontario, and Nyssa in Oregon. Washington state members of the company are from Aberdeen, Vancouver, and Everett.
The ceremony is open to the public.
